Dgn Shp Converter
Article created with FME Desktop 2016.0 Downloads • Feel free to download the data (Roadsdgn.dgn file) attached to this article if you'd like to perform these steps yourself as we go along! Introduction This tutorial will show you how to convert Bentley MicroStation Design (*.dgn) to ESRI Shape file (*.shp). We'll combine several CAD levels into a single output Shape file, and translate the CAD level names to GIS attributes. Step-by-Step Instructions To complete the process described in the video, you will need to carry out the following steps. 1) Start FME Workbench In Windows this is found under Start >All Programs >FME Desktop >FME Workbench 2) Create a New Workspace This is found on the Create Workspace section of the FME Workbench interface.
Alternatively, use Ctrl+n as a shortcut. 3) Browse to and select the source (Reader) dataset Select Bentley MicroStation Design (V8) for the reader; do this by typing the name into the field until it appears within the dropdown list. Navigate to the RoadsDGN.dgn file and select it.
I am a frequent recipient of microstation dgn files and don't like it because I don't have software to convert it to autocad. I do have ARCVIEW, but I can't edit the files.
4) Modify the input Parameters Go into the Reader parameters and set the “Group Elements By” to “level name”. When we group elements by level name on feature types, we will see the level name rather than the level number. 5) Set the output (Writer) format to ESRI Shapefile Select ESRI Shape for the format; do this by typing the name into the field until it appears within the dropdown list. 6) Set the output (Writer) dataset location In the video, it is set to C: FMEData2015 Output. However, you can set your output location to whatever best suits your directory structure. 7) Set the output (Writer) Shape File Definition By default, the “Shape File Definition” will be copied from one of the reader feature types.
Since we are changing the name of the shapefile, and creating a new attribute, we will select “Manual” for the Shape File Definition. 8) Modify output (Writer) Feature Type Properties • In the Feature Type properties, enter “Roads” for the Shape File Name. • Set the “Geometry” to “shape_polyline”. • In the User Attributes tab, create a new attribute called “RoadType”. For the Type, select “char” (character); and for the Width set it to “20”.

We have now completed all the steps necessary to set up a new destination schema. 9) Add FeatureTypeExtractor Transformer The FeatureTypeExtractor transformer will take the feature type name (which represents the road type), and move it into an attribute for every road feature.
Add the “FeatureTypeExtractor” transformer to the canvas by typing its name, and selecting it from the list. Connect all the source feature type output ports, there are 7 in total, to the FeatureTypeExtractor transformer’s input port. 10) Modify the Transformer Parameters Open the properties of the FeatureTypeExtractor. Change the name of the Destination Attribute to “RoadType”, to match our destination schema. 11) Connect the transformer to the output (Writer) Feature Type 12) Click the Run button on the toolbar Run the workspace by clicking on the green play button. This carries out the translation.

The SHP (Shapefile) format stores vector files compatible with various Geographical Information System (GIS) software. SHP was developed by the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI), an American provider of GIS software and geodatabase management solutions, with the aim of improving interoperability between GIS software produced by ESRI and other developers. An SHP file usually contains vectorial descriptions of geospatial data (e.g. Rivers, lakes), including specific attributes. DGN stands for 'design' and represents an extension typically used for (Computer Aided Design) files created with Bentley Systems' MicroStation or with IGDS (Intergraph's Interactive Graphics Design System) — two popular programs used by architects, engineers, constructors and designers.
DGN files can include sizeable building projects with a rich amount of details, usually have a very large size and can be viewed with a limited number of CAD programs. So, how to change SHP into DGN? The quick and simple way to handle your files is to get a quality piece of software, such as reaConverter.
Although it is fast, this software is extremely efficient in managing a wide range of conversions. As you will soon realize, reaConverter will help you avoid spending countless hours trying to figure out how to convert SHPs. But at the same time, it will allow you to apply a wide range of. Download and Install reaConverter reaConverter is quick to download, install and launch, and you don't need to be an IT specialist in order to understand in a few minutes how it operates.
